UUSC-JD is a platform for progressive issue activism, rooted in faith communities and sustained across time. 

Our purpose is to strategically influence public policy and political decision-making in support of progressive issues nation-wide, from a grassroots, faith-based perspective.

Dick Mark, M.Div.

Dick Mark is Executive Director of Just Democracy, based in Concord, NH, and Cambridge, MA.

Born and raised in New Hampshire, Dick has been involved with non-profit human service agencies, faith-based organizing, public policy advocacy, philanthropy and electoral work since 1972 when he graduated from the Iliff (Methodist) School of Theology in Denver with a Masters of Divinity degree. His previous work has included leadership positions with the Union of Concerned Scientists, Professionals’ Coalition for Nuclear Arms Control, 20/20 Vision, Common Cause, and International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War.  He has served Methodist congregations in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

He has worked with national progressive foundations including the Beldon Fund, the Surdna Foundation, and the John Merck Fund. Dick has also served as the founding director of Conservation Strategies, the first individual "527c" in the nation, focusing on helping the conservation communities in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington State become more effective in the political arena. Dick has also been the Director of Environmental Programs for the Nathan Cummings Foundation, an international family foundation.

Dick has advised or managed campaigns for local, state and national candidates and has advised progressive donors throughout the nation. He is a trustee of Maine Initiatives, a foundation supporting grassroots social justice organizations throughout the state of Maine. Dick has served on the national boards of Friends of the Earth, Environmental Media Services, and Green Corps.
